Socratic Seminar Notes

  • Adults can still learn from playing.
  • Kids can use their imagination but as adults, your ego seems to grow larger.
  • As children, we are fearless to do anything.
*Learning from a mistake may be a good way to learn something.

  • Free play makes up your creativity.
  • Free play would be just like free learning.
  • Play is something you would do with a passion.
Habits:
  • Nowadays, nobody really has the guts to ask why so thats why students don't really understand.
  • Some students get fed up with school so later they don't want to learn.
  • We don't learn what we want to learn
1. How can these concepts enhance your learning as you arrive at a moment when grades no longer matter?
-- In my opinion, these concepts enhance my learning as I arrive at a moment when grades no longer matter because it gives me motivation to learn about something I actually want to learn about. This gives me the opportunity to open up to creativity and do things that I have not experienced with before. This gives me the desire to actually want to learn since I'll be interested in whatever it is that I want to learn about.

2. How can these concepts enhance your ability to master content for the AP exam and other hurdles you have yet to leap?
--
3.How can you use these concepts to collaborate with and inspire others, to improve the information exchange and overall value of your learning network?

Literature Analysis #5

Literature Analysis #5
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

*Briefly summarize the novel you read.
The novel begins with Nick at West Egg in Long Island where all the wealthy people live. He lives next to the most known guy in New York, a guy named Jay Gatsby. Anyways, he goes to see his cousin Daisy, her husband Tom Buchanan, and Jordan. Nick finds Jay Gatsby very interesting when he first sees him, to the point that he really wants to talk to him. He also finds out that Tom has a lover named Myrtle who is married to Wilson. The day comes when he actually does talk to Gatsby and him, Daisy, Tom, and Jordan all begin to hang out more and go to all of Gatsby's parties. Little by little, Gatsby and Nick become really close, so close that he tells him about his love story with Daisy. Daisy and Gatsby have also become so close that it seems like the love they once had for each other is coming back. Tom soon becomes suspicious of their relationship and begins to accuse Gatsby of many things, they get in an argument. Daisy and Gatsby leave and while she's driving she accidentally runs over Myrtle. When Wilson finds out it was Gatsby, he decides to murder him and then kills himself. They make a funeral for Gatsby and then Nick decides to leave West Egg,

*Theme of the novel.
The theme of The Great Gatsby would be impossible love and the ranking of social classes. Impossible love is shown throughout this novel because Gatsby is deeply in love with Daisy but having Tom Buchanan in the way, their love cannot happen. On the other hand, the ranking of social classes is shown because Gatsby lied about his life so that Daisy will fall in love with him all over again and he will be able to meet her parents requirements since before he didn't and Tom did.

*Describe the author's tone.
The author's tone in The Great Gatsby would be a tone of confusion or better said, contradiction. At times Nick will admire Gatsby for all the luxuries he has and for the guy being but at the same time he really doesn't like the way he is a lot of the times and everything he has. Nick really does not know what he thinks of Gatsby.

*Describe five literary elements/techniques you observed that strengthened your understanding of the theme and/or your sense of the tone.
Flashback: The author of the novel tends to alternate the story from present to past and it is an element that strengthens the understanding of the theme because it shows why Gatsby is so in love with Daisy.
Antagonist: Tom Buchanan I would consider to be the antagonist. By him being the antagonist, the theme of the novel is better understood because he is one of the reasons why Gatsby and Daisy are not able to be together which is what Gatsby really wants.
Setting: F. Scott Fitzgerald made this novel take place in West Egg and East Egg so ti strengthen the readers better understanding of the them because each of those places represents two different social statuses in which the characters belong to.
Archetypes: In the novel, Fitzgerald describes Daisy like if she was a young girl while her being an actual mother and Myrtle is more described as an older woman, woman like figure, when she isn't a mother.
Symbolism: The novel has different types of symbolism. One example would be the weather, as the weather changes, the mood of each character seems to change which ends up giving understanding to the authors tone.

Nine Elements of Poetry

Daddy's Poem by Unknown

  • What's the dramatic situation?
The poem is told by both female and male by which they both tell a story about a young girl that does not have a father because he passed a way while at work as a fireman. This poem is written in today's world and the speaker seems to be in the classroom with the little girl in the poem.
  • Structure of the Poem:
The structure of this poem is written as a story, there are no stanzas, and it just flows.
  • Theme of the poem:
The theme of this poem would be 'love'. This poem includes love between a daughter and a father. This love is reflected in the poem because the little girl explains how much she loves her daddy even though he is not physically with her because he is in heaven.
  • Images and Figures of Speech:
I can see the mother of the little girl worried as she sees her daughter go up there. I can see all the people talking about her without knowing the truth behind why the little girl's dad could not be there. I can see the little girl up there as she speaks with confidence and all the other people in awes. I can feel the love that this girl has for her father. I can feel her happiness as she talks about how great of a father she has. I can feel my presence there as I am reading the poem.
  • Important words:
"Looks like another deadbeat dad,
too busy to waste his day."

"I love my daddy very much,
he's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here,
but heaven's just too far..."
  • Tone:
The author of this poem seems to have a very serious poem in which he is trying to send out a message to all the audience. There is no type of humor in this poem whatsoever. He makes all the characters become amazed to what the little girl say as well as the audience too.
  • Literary Techniques:
*Apostrophe-
'"I know you're with me Daddy,"
to the silence she called out.'
*Imagery-
'A room full of daddies and children,
all starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them,
who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second,
they saw him at her side.'
*Anaphora-
'Her hair was up in a pony tail,
her favorite dress tied with a bow.'
*Personification-
'by the love of her shining star'
  • Prosody:
This poem rhymes at every other verse and it flows with the uses of different punctuation like semicolons, commas, and even periods.

Paragraphs on AP Intro Essay Exam

1. Write 1-2 paragraphs about the test in which you answer the following questions (you may post to your blog or bring hard copy to class Friday 2.17):

  • What was easy/expected?
  • What was difficult/unexpected?
  • What did you learn about the AP questions?
  • What did you learn about your own performance under pressure?
  • How will this experience influence your preparation for the actual exam?

The exam taken today I thought was pretty difficult to do. For example the first one with the quote, I did not understand what the quote meant which really made it impossible for me to get the introduction done right. The second question though is the only question that I would say that I'm actually certain about because I did understand the question but the last one was a little iffy. I learned that these AP questions may have really difficult words and that I need to learn how to analyze any quotes given to me until I know exactly what each of them mean so that I will address the prompt accurately. I learned that by being under pressure, I tend to just barely think about what I am going to write and just end up writing whatever comes to my head whether I know it's write or wrong. This experience will help me in the way that I will think more about what I'm going to write rather than just start writing because I noticed that when I just began to write, I had a lot of time left.

Favorite Poem :)

Daddy's Poem

by unknown

Her hair was up in a pony tail,
her favorite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's Day at school,
and she couldn't wait to go.
But her mommy tried to tell her,
that she probably should stay home.
Why the kids might not understand,
if she went to school alone.
But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates of why he wasn't there today.
But still her mother worried,
for her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again,
she tried to keep her daughter home.
But the little girl went to school
eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never sees;
a dad who never calls.
There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently,
anxious in their seats
One by one the teacher called a student from the class. To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed.
At last the teacher called her name,
every child turned to stare.
Each of them was searching,
for a man who wasn't there.
"Where's her daddy at?"
she heard a boy call out.
"She probably doesn't have one,"
another student dared to shout.
And from somewhere near the back,
she heard a daddy say,
"Looks like another deadbeat dad,
too busy to waste his day."
The words did not offend her,
as she smiled up at her Mom.
And looked back at her teacher,
who told her to go on.
And with hands behind her back,
slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child,
came words incredibly unique.
"My Daddy couldn't be here,
because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be,
since this is such a special day.
And though you cannot meet him,
I wanted you to know.
All about my daddy,
and how much he loves me so.
He loved to tell me stories
he taught me to ride my bike.
He surprised me with pink roses,
and taught me to fly a kite.
We used to share fudge sundaes,
and ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him.
I'm not standing here alone.
"Cause my daddy's always with me,
even though we are apart
I know because he told me,
he'll forever be in my heart"
With that, her little hand reached up,
and lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat,
beneath her favorite dress.
And from somewhere here in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter,
who was wise beyond her years.
For she stood up for the love
of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her,
doing what was right.
And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft,
but its message clear and loud.
"I love my daddy very much,
he's my shining star.
And if he could, he'd be here,
but heaven's just too far
You see he was a fireman
and died just this past year
When airplanes hit the towers
and taught Americans to fear.
But sometimes when I close my eyes,
it's like he never went away."
And then she closed her eyes,
and she saw him there that day.
And to her mothers amazement,
she witnessed with surprise
A room full of daddies and children,
all starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them,
who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second,
they saw him at her side.
"I know you're with me Daddy,"
to the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers,
of those once filled with doubt.
Not one in that room could explain it,
for each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside her,
was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.
And a child was blessed, if only for a moment,
by the love of her shining star.
And given the gift of believing,
that heaven is never too far.
They say it takes a minute to find a special
person, an hour to appreciate them,
a day to love them, but then an entire
life to forget them.

Abstract: Big Question

Technology expanded greatly to the point that it has become an important component in everyone’s lives. Whether it is the television, computer, or anything else it is useful and needed in various ways. Technology started off as a danger to many people because  people began losing their jobs but at the same time it was and still remains helpful in society’s lives today. With technology, we are capable of communicating with each other much easier whether the people are close by or far away. Also, we are able to find different answers to any questions we have. It is one thing that allowed households to have electricity all over the world as well as water running. Many buildings or any other structures have been built thanks to technology. It has been something that has pretty much created what the world is like today. Technology is needed to be studied so that in the future, we will know what exactly to expect and so that we will be prepared for it when we get there. I will research this by going through different websites as well as become updated with any technical advances.
